The two hives that I had to requeen resulted in one hive accepting the queen and rebounding pretty well. I checked the other hive ten days after seeing that the queen had been released and did not see any sign of queen activity. I waited one more week and checked and I saw some eggs and a little bit of capped brood. I checked a week later and found a very uneven brood pattern with tall dome shaped capped brood. I believe I have either a drone laying queen or a laying worker. I have read that placing one frame of open brood in the hive each week for three weeks would allow the hive to requeen itself and discourage the laying worker from laying anymore eggs. I have been told to take the hive about one hundred yards away and dump it out and then return it to its original position. The laying worker or the drone laying queen will not be able to return to the hive and the bees that do fly back will accept a new queen.

Requeening two hives at MOMO

I have noticed that both of the new hives from Alabama do not have any sign of queen activity and had been very aggressive. I ordered 2 queens from Bill Mullins and put them in the top brood boxes of the hives. I inspected both hives after 6 days and both were out.

Very happy with the bees at MOMO (what we’ve decided to call our second apiary site). Lots of bees and the queens are working and laying lots of eggs. I’m starting to get excited about the coming beekeeping season. We picked up three nucs this morning in Shelbyville and all three are in good shape.

Spring is in the Air

March 3, 2011 and the bees are getting pollen. I think that we are very close to springtime. I see the pollen sacks on the bees back legs full of bright yellow and red pollen. I’m starting to get excited.

One Less Hive

Starting the year with the realization that one of your hives starved to death with honey less than a foot away is hard to take. I know it is part of the beekeeping experience but still hard to take. The good thing is SPRING IS ALMOST HERE.

Honey is harvested and in the storehouse

Finished the last of the rent collecting last week from my bees and this years harvest is great tasting, unfiltered, unheated, chocked full of allergy relieving pollen grains, all natural, natures perfect food and did I say that it tastes great.
